According to the Australian Psychological Society, trauma can be the result of any stressful situation, experience, incident, or event that is powerful and upsetting which triggers a traumatic reaction and that intrude into daily life. They are usually experiences which are life threatening, pose a significant threat to a person’s physical or psychological wellbeing or witnessing a distressing event, however, situations or experiences which appear less severe can also lead to psychological trauma. Some of the common, and cumulative reasons that underlying trauma may develop include:

* Childhood adversity, abuse, or neglect

* Witnessing a distressing event

* Any circumstances that cause you to feel chronically unsafe, whether physically or psychologically
